Design is the creation of something in the mind. David Carson has taken that concept to the extreme, allowing his mind to create something people have to think about and then appreciate. David Carson represents graphic design to a high degree, to have to incorporate aesthetics and production of layout, design and typography, is a lot to think about when you want to get a message across to a viewer. His journey through education, experience, and the love for art has given him the innovation he needs to succeed. Even though, Carson started out with a surfing career, I believe that, is an art in itself. The way the surfer has to glide across the water while still balancing is incredible, and you’re surrounded by beautiful things water, sky, and beaches. Surfboards are not just something surfers ride on, but a piece of artwork that takes a lot of time and money to create and appreciate.
David Carson was born in 1952 in Corpus Christi, Texas, soon after his family moved to New York. David’s artistic abilities were shown at a young age. His family moved a lot because of his father’s job, which gave him the creative view he has on the world today. His first time approaching graphic designs was not until college at the University of Arizona. He also attended San Diego State and Oregon College of Commercial Art. After college Carson became a professional surfer were he was 9th best surfer in the world.
Through his surfing career he was able to use his artist and graphic design skills to direct a surfing magazine, called Beach Culture. This was David Carson’s first significant impact on the world of graphic designs. He traveled to Switzerland for a BA in Sociology to further pursue his career and learn more about people, considering he was surrounded all the time. Later, he attended a three week graphic design course were he met his biggest influence, his professor, Hans-Rudolph Lutz.
Not afraid to break away from the norm he was able to jump right in and create something new for the world. This was just the begging to his career. In 1991 David worked on How magazine before launching his own magazine Ray Gun. This magazine is what got people’s attention about Carson. His work has been featured in more then 180 magazines and newspaper articles across the world. Because of his recent events and new ideas David Carson was featured in the New York Times and Newsweek which attracted major business such as Pepsi Cola, Nike, MTV, Levi, Toyota and much more. This gave him the opportunity to expand his thoughts. In 2000 Carson opened his own studio in North Carolina; by 2004 he was the Creative director of Gibbes Museum of Art in Charleston.
David’s latest works have been in film and television. He wants to direct commercials and videos. He did a short film called “The End of Print”. He has also collaborated with a professor form Harvard Business on a documentary called “The Art of discipline and creativity.” This was to show others the beauty in his work and get more people to join the design world or just influence them in a positive way.
David Carson became interested in a new and inventive type of typography and photography based design. He inspired many new artists in the 1990’s. His work is not at all what people call “traditional”. As an artist usually is, David Carson was very much attached to his creations emotionally. Carson’s work is a combination of thoughts and ideas lost in the subconscious. He wanted graphic design to be serious and just as demanding as any other kind of art. David was able to get many designers to step out of the graphic design box and into a world of art through their fingertips. By using color and words he was able to capture the audience. Although, Carson has a tendency to make work that is hard to read and makes you think, this is what makes his art so special and his. Because Carson was not into traditional art, this is what he is now known for. David Carson has been one of the greatest influences on modern graphics arts in the last twenty five years. He was able to take photography and type and manipulate and twist them together to form a deeper and meaningful composition.
In November 1995, Carson published his first book the End of Print. It sold over 200,000 copies in five different languages and soon after became the best-selling graphic design book worldwide. His accomplishments told him to write a second book, which followed in 1997, 2nd Sight. “It is said that this book simply changed the public face of graphic design” (Newsweek). For Carson, this was an honor. His work is his passion, because of this he is flourishing today.
Davis Carson’s work continues to be subjective and driven by his intuitions. Carson researches all projects and experiments it with intent to communicate in different mediums. Carson keeps his work small and mobile and remains a hands on designer. He still has a traditional office where people can find him. His travels and experience have allowed him to see things most have not, because of this he was able to come up with ideas that most people cannot comprehend. David Carson is an inspiration to the graphic design world.
